So I was invited to a 1920’s murder mystery that took place last weekend.
I scoured the internet for some sort of 1920’s dress but then remembered I had a lovely lace dress that I bought from Monsoon so that was that sorted.
Then the necklace and feather boa came from WM Armstrong store which hosts a selection of great vintage wear. The pearl necklace, I found at the Grassmarket Armstrongs and the Black Boa in the Clerk Street store.
Tempted to buy a fake cigarette and holder and long black gloves but I held off. The thought of more fancy dress never to be worn or used again was too much!
For the head-dress, I decided to make it. YES, you read right!
I found this tutorial, which kept me right for the basics – Head Dress Tutorial
From Remnant Kings, I bought some stretch sequin trim. Abby, my sewing teacher kindly gave me three peacock feathers to complete the look.
It was a pretty quick process and one I’m quite happy with. I stitched the feathers in with thread and a small piece of stretch sequin to stop the bottom of the feathers from scratching my forehead. I think it took my roughly half an hour to complete it and finish it, which a huge jump from any of my current makes!

Blimey, March has come up all rosy with these crackers!
I’m pretty sure I found all of these whilst on The Fold Line website. The Fold Line itself is a great encyclopaedia for us sewists, I keep finding loads on the forum. It’s something I’d recommend to anyone who sews as most questions have been asked and answered!
http://beebeeshandmadedress.blogspot.co.uk/ – I can’t remember why I clicked but I’m sure happy I did as a Seamwork “Mesa” was reviewed and shown off by the lovely Stevie. It’s been one of the Seamwork patterns that have been on my radar and really must get down as I’m sure Little Miss Lorraine has done one as well and it looks so good!
https://sewinprogress.com/2017/02/25/the-saunio-cardigan/ – As you can see the title just cries out with the saunio cardigan! Ha Ha and I’m not quite sure if you know that I wasn’t particularly blown away at first. Well that changed, thanks to this version and a whole lot of other versions of Saunio. I love her layout of her blog as well.
https://stitchingupparisblog.wordpress.com/tours/ – Who wouldn’t run around in sheer hyper happiness shouting “yes, Yes YES” to Fabric tours in Paris? Personally, I love a macaron, but combining a tour with fabric and Paris is sheer amazing in my books … I wonder who many pennies I would have at the end of one of these tours? Probably zilch! I better started saving if I want to go!
Today alongside @Mrs.f_72, @Beatgirl9091 & @louswlinwood (all on Instagram), I visited the Stitching & Sewing Show at the SEC, Glasgow.
Just one of the many stalls! The advanced technology for tickets after showing the Groupon voucher!!Mmmmm, for sewists there was not a lot of garment fabric stalls. In fact, 3 at the most (if you are darn lucky) would be thumbs up for us dressmakers.
Grrrr. There are just too many card-making stalls considering the title of the show – EH STITCHING & SEWING??? To top it off there weren’t very many quilting stalls either. Ok maybe I’m being brutal here but seriously I wasn’t impressed.
First off, we sat down and watched the demo for the Lutterloh System, which I’m keen to learn more about after being nominated for being part of the demo using only my hip and bust measurements (thanks for that @beatgirl9091 😉 ).
Using my Bust and Hips measurements for the Lutterloh System Ohhhh patterns, lots of patterns!I would love to speak to a real person, not just a product demonstrator about the system and if they think it’s value for money. If you have it and use it, please drop me an email or PM me on Instagram – I’d like to ask you a few questions!
Thanks to Shirley for the photo!
Then we wondered for up and down the stalls having a wee look.
We all then stopped for lunch feeling rather peckish. I didn’t even notice the time, me thinking it’s like 11 but no it was 1 pm! I had a drink of juice and ate the cake I devoured and saved from yesterday’s retirement lunch. I should in fact of ate my sandwiches that I made up – oh well! Don’t worry, they didn’t go to waste as I ate them when I got home!
After a nibble, we then did the rest of the stalls which was half exhibition space and stalls. Here we found another two stalls that did dressmaking fabrics and not just cotton for quilters. One (dots n stripes) did a good range of jerseys and other fabric. Check out the sparkling flamingo jersey and the cute ribbons!
Yes, this was all Jersey! And it was all rather gorgeous quality! I’m quite astonished I did go mad! Quirky trims at Dots & Stripes’ Stand Fla fla flapping fabulous flamingos!Allison’s Craft Emporium had a good chunk of cotton & baby cord. This where I bought the cotton lawn at £3 per metre (see the last picture in the post)!
The Cool Crafting stand had an excellent spread of Merchant & Mills patterns as well as Chambray and Essex Yarn Dye. I’m glad they are attending Edinburgh’s Knitting & stitching Show this year as I’ll be making a list of goodies to buy from them specifically!!
The stunning Merchant & Mills Dress Shirt in Essex Dyed Yarn at the Cool Crafting Stand. @beatgirl9091 doing a rather splendid job modelling the Betsy Dress at the Cool Crafting Stand. So I hate to say it was a “Meh, it was ok” and dare I say it “there is room for improvement”. If it wasn’t for the lovely company of these three ladies, I’m sure I would have left earlier!
My rather small haul!So there you have it.
I’m pleased with what I’ve bought. Yes, there is a but coming. My haul could have been so much bigger had there been a tad more stands geared towards dressmakers!
But fear not, the haul may be huge at the KnItting & Stitching Show in April at the RHC, Edinburgh! Yes, I’ll be going (probably on the Sunday) to hunt for some sewing tools and fabrics, look out for that post too!
